The concert will feature Stetson Professor Dr. Michael Rickman as well as Stetson students and participants in the program. Following the recital will be a reception in Presser, room 132. Light refreshments will be served.
The Community School of the Arts Outreach program raises funds for local underprivileged students to take music lessons through Stetson’s very own community school. This provides invaluable experience and learning enrichment to teenagers and adolescents who would not otherwise be able to participate in these activities.
Cultural Credit provided. The event is FREE but donations are greatly appreciated.

Studens gain first-hand knowledge of China's global power

Michael Addessi radically embraced the basic concept of "new experiences" during the Business School's annual undergraduate field study to China. He leaped from picky to passionate in the cuisine category.
The senior Finance major from Hudson was one of 10 business students and two faculty who crossed the Pacific to engage in academic programs, company visits and cultural experiences in Shanghai, Beijing and Suzhou.
"We have an obligation as educators to provide our students with new and wonderful experiences in other parts of the world," said Dr. Carolyn Mueller, leader of the May expedition. "The field study really opens students' eyes to the amazing differences in culture, living styles, food and business practices."
Food photographs are a main theme of field study albums. Everyone is encouraged to taste a few exotic foods. Addessi needed no encouragement.
"I consider myself a picky eater," he said. "But in China, I tried everything. I ate scorpion, silkworm, bird's nest, starfish, grasshopper, cow tongue, duck tongue, chicken feet, baby pigeon, quail egg, chicken heart, chicken liver and ox. I figured this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I needed to try as much as I could."
Food is only part of the story.
"We went to some incredible manufacturing plants," said Drew Whitaker, a senior General Business major from New Canaan, Conn. "Each one gave us a different perspective of what doing business is like in China."
The students engaged industry leaders in meetings and manufacturing plant tours of General Electric Aviation and Haworth furniture. They gained business insight from American entrepreneurs at Wise Dragon Academy and met with media and public relations experts about business coverage in the booming country. Academy owners Stephen Berning and Christina Homan hosted the group in Suzhou.
"Everywhere we went, huge buildings were under construction," said Scott Pearson, a senior Finance major from Carterville, Ill. "Between Shanghai and Suzhou, there was constant construction on apartment buildings and other high rises. It was very impressive."
Accountant Elizabeth (Lisa) Frickert, a senior Business Administration major from Davenport, admitted that before going to China, her conception of Chinese business was colored with a "sweatshop" stereotype, but that impression quickly disappeared.
"GE Aviation and Haworth were state-of-the-art companies," she said. "Their energy efficiencies and initiatives were considerably more integrated into their daily operations than any company I have ever worked for. If not for the commute, I would be happy to be employed by either company."
Besides business and food, the field study included a large helping of culture that ranged from day-to-day scenes on waterways to conversations with people in markets and on crowded streets, and visits to nightclubs and historic sites.
Students and faculty wandered through the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, visited the 600-year-old Taoist Temple of Heaven and the Yonghe Gong Lama Temple (one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the world), hiked along the Great Wall and cruised the Huang River flanked by Shanghai's historic and modern iconic buildings.
And they did far, far more.
"China is a major global player, and will continue growing in importance to businesses around the world," said Mueller, chair of Management and International Business. She was accompanied to China this year by Dr. James Mallett, Finance Department chair, who will lead the 2011 China Field Study.
With each trip, said Mallett, the Business School strengthens its contacts in China. The trip helps give students a "superior educational experience in the very different culture of a rising major world power," offering insight into global economies and job and business opportunities.
It's "critical," said Mueller, that the school promote and support these international experiences for students to see how business works in China and other countries, and to meet business leaders who share first-hand knowledge: "It helps open their eyes to wonderful opportunities they may not have considered before."
The undergraduate field study was the fourth Asian field study undertaken by the Business School in the last 18 months, two of which were for graduate students. One included Vietnam. Other field study destinations are being planned for 2011, including Malaysia

Women's concert to feature StetsonU singers and composers

The international women’s music fraternity, Eta Pi, and the Volusia County Alumnae Chapter (VCAC) of Sigma Alpha Iota, will present a benefit concert at Stetson University on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. This event is open to the public with a suggested $10 donation.
The concert features works by women composers, including Clara Schumann, Henriette Renie and eminent American composers Amy Beach and Emma Lou Diemer. Performers include Stetson alumnae Sharla Mitchell Mercado, piano; Cameron Huster, harp; as well as current students in Stetson’s School of Music.
The VCAC commissioned a composition that will be performed by the Women’s Choir in the world premiere of this original piece. “City Trees” features text from a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay and music composed by recent Stetson graduate, Katie Harrell. Harrell’s recently debuted works include Bent Over Backwards (2011) for gamelan ensemble and Ever Since This Story (2011) for clarinets and strings. A 2011 graduate of Stetson University, Harrell is currently a master of arts candidate at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. She described the inspiration for her composition: “This piece was born out of a huge transition. I moved from my hometown in Central Florida to the San Francisco Bay Area. I was in a completely new environment—a vast, bustling city juxtaposed by dense redwood forest. In this piece,” she explained, “I attempt to draw energy from Millay’s text and project my own idea of how trees may sound.”

Stetson University Symphonic Band in concert Feb. 10

The Stetson University Symphonic Band, conducted by Bobby Adams, veteran music professor and director of bands in Stetson’s School of Music since 1987, will perform Friday, Feb. 10. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall, located at 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.

The concert will also feature Stetson music faculty member, Douglas L. Phillips, conductor, and adjunct professor of percussion Marja Kerney, marimba.

Bobby Adams, professor of Music Education and Director of Bands at Stetson University, is celebrating 25 years with Stetson University and his fiftieth year of teaching throughout Indiana and Florida.

Weiner Holocaust Memorial Lecture at StetsonU Feb. 22

The Bernard Weiner Holocaust Memorial Lecture, entitled, “Will not the judge of all the earth do justice?” by Clifford Orwin, will be held at Stetson University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Lee Chapel inside Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. This lecture, sponsored by Hillel, Stetson University’s Jewish Student Organization, Phi Beta Kappa and Stetson’s Honors Program, is open to the public, free of charge.

Clifford Orwin is professor of Jewish Studies, Political Science and Classics at the University of Toronto. He is the founding co-director of the Graduate Summer Seminar of the Tikvah Project in Jewish Thought at Princeton University. This program recruits top graduate students in Jewish Studies and related fields, in an effort to revitalize Jewish Studies in North America, Great Britain, and Israel. Orwin has lectured on Jewish topics in Israel and throughout North America.

The Bernard Weiner Lecture Series at Stetson Universitywas established by Dr. Sy Weiner of DeLand to honor the life and work of his brother, the late Bernard Weiner. Bernard Weiner was a leader in the development of Holocaust curricula for New York state schools and was one of the founders of the Rockland Center for Holocaust Studies, now the Holocaust Museum and Study Center, Spring Valley, N.Y. The Bernard Weiner Lectures are given annually to explore a variety of issues related to the Holocaust.

Semester in Washington

Students interested in enrolling in the Washington Semester at American University during the fall semester of 2012 should confer with Dr. Bailey this month. The program is described in the STETSON BULLETIN and on the website www.washingtonsemester.com . It offers an exciting variety of opportunities for juniors and seniors majoring in several departmental and interdisciplinary programs in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Business. All of the units are organized to take advantage of the “Washington Capitol scene,” but there are specialized areas enabling students to select from a menu of choices: American Government and Politics; Public Law; Criminal Justice; International Business and Trade (in Washington or with the option that includes three weeks in New York City, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong); Print and Broadcast Journalism; Economic Policy; U.S. Foreign Policy; International Environment and Development (includes 3 weeks in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands); International Law and Organization (includes a field practicum in Geneva, Brussels, Strasbourg, and The Hague); Contemporary Islam Studies (with 3 weeks in Egypt and Jordan or other Middle East countries); and Transforming Communities (Social Change and Governance).

Prior to applying for the program, the student should consult with his/her faculty adviser to determine how the 4 course units (16 hours) of Washington Semester credit would apply to meeting departmental and general requirements at Stetson. Stetson NOW chapter to host V-Day benefit Feb. 16-18

Stetson University’s chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) will host V-Day benefit performances, “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer,” helping in the fight to end violence against women, Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 16, 17 and 18.
The performances are open to the public and will take place at 8 p.m. all three days, in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building (CUB), 131 E. Minnesota Ave., DeLand. Tickets will be sold for $5 in front of the CUB the week before the performances and at the door. Ten percent of proceeds will go to the international V-Day movement, with the rest going to the Daytona Beach Domestic Abuse Council.
Stetson’s performances are part of a global movement started by playwright Eve Ensler called “V-Day,” with the mission to end violence against women and girls. In previous years, this event was recognized by annual performances of the Vagina Monologues.
“A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer” features a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Ensler and Mollie Doyle. These diverse voices rise up in a collective roar to break open, expose and examine the insidiousness of violence at all levels: brutality, neglect, a punch, even a put-down.

'Race in the Age of Obama' topic of Feb. 7 talk

Author and editor Ta-Nehisi Coates will lecture on “A Deeper Black: Race in the Age of Obama,” on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at Stetson University. The presentation is free and open to the public and will be held in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building, 131 E. Minnesota Ave., DeLand.
On the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 8, Coates will lead a writing workshop, which is also free and open to the public. For more information on participating in the workshop, call Stetson’s Cross Cultural Center at (386) 822-7401.
Coates, a writer and senior editor for The Atlantic, is author of the critically acclaimed memoir, The Beautiful Struggle, a tough and touching description of growing up in Baltimore during the age of crack. It’s also a vivid portrait of his father, a former Vietnam veteran and Black Panther who started his own underground black press, had seven children with four women, and dedicated his life to carrying his sons across the shoals of inner-city adolescence.
As one of the most original and perceptive new voices in black America, renowned American novelist Walter Mosley, calls Coates “the young James Joyce of the hip hop generation.” Coates writes about various topics, including politics, race, black history and pop culture. Rachel Maddow, an American television host and political commentator, recently wrote, “Don’t know, if in U.S. commentary, there is a more beautiful writer than Ta-Nehisi Coates.”

The Bonner Scholars Program will be Skyping with representatives from Teach on the Beach on Friday, Feb. 3, from 2:15-3:45 p.m. in the LBC Rinker Auditorium. Teach on the Beach is a non-profit organization based in Ghana that provides scholarships to young Ghanian students and engages them in discussion about current events through a program called “NewsHour.”

If you are looking for a chance to get out of the country this summer, get some volunteer experience, are interested in talking with Ghanian students about their views on international affairs, or just want to learn about education in Ghana and international volunteering, join us! Hatters run in support for cancer research

As student-athletes, members of the Stetson University Athletics teams are accustomed to running as part of their training regimen.

On Saturday morning, January 28, members of the Stetson baseball team were running for a far different reason. The Hatters took part in the Me Strong 5K in DeLand to help raise money for cancer research and to support families dealing with cancer.

The event was held in honor of Linda Ryan, a local resident and a supporter of Stetson athletics, who is fighting the third battle against cancer in her life. Before the return of her disease, Ryan trained for, and ran in, the San Diego marathon in 2011.

Members of the Stetson athletics family were recruited to participate in the Me Strong 5K by James Stem, who serves as Director of Operations and Facilities for Stetson Athletics. Before assuming his current duties, Stem served as general manager of the DeLand Suns, a summer college league baseball team.

“The Ryan Family took me in for the summer, always inviting me over dinner, helping me out with various duties as the GM, always coming out to the ball games and supporting the Suns,” Stem said. “After the summer, I truly started to grow a special bond with the family.”

In addition to garnering the support of the Stetson athletics family, Stem participated in the event and finished fifth in the 25-29 age group.

The Ryan family – which includes Linda’s husband Sean and sons Matthew (14) and Ethan (10) – worked together with friends to organize the 5K in DeLand. The event drew more than 800 runners.

In addition to the participation of the baseball team, the Stetson women’s soccer team, women’s golf team and cheerleading squad also participated in the event. The soccer team, along with coaches Julie Orlowski and Brittany Jones, along with members of the golf team, were placed along the race route to help guide runners.

The cheerleaders, as well as new Stetson mascot John B., were stationed in front of the Edmunds Center to provide encouragement for the runners.

All 35 members of the baseball team finished in the top 35 of their age groups, 10 in the 15-19 group and 25 in the 20-24 group. Senior pitcher Tucker Donahue was the top finisher for the baseball team, coming in fifth in the 20-24 group, good for 66th overall, with a time of 24:05.

Also among the runners was the wife of men’s assistant basketball coach Steve Drabyn, Brittany, who finished 19th overall and won her 25-29 age group with a time of 20:43.

Most remarkably, Linda Ryan finished 28th in her age group and continues to carry the fight to a dreaded disease. Matthew Ryan finished 79th overall and 12th in his age group while Ethan finished 31st in his age group.

The overall top finishers for the men were Christopher Anderson of Port Orange with a time of 17:31, Salvatore Mancini of West Palm Beach with a time of 17:52 and Hunter Tolbert of DeLand with a time of 18:22.

The top overall female finishers were Sue O’Malley of Port Orange with a time of 19:26, Bego Lopez of DeLand with a time of 19:31 and Alexa Gemma of South Daytona with a time of 19:48.

Photojournalist based in Kenya to give presentation Feb. 6

Photo essayist Brendan Bannon will visit Stetson University on Monday, Feb. 6, to give a presentation about his photographs documenting the plight of people living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Bannon’s presentation will be at 7 p.m. in the duPont-Ball Library, lower level, Room 25, accessed from the Nemec Courtyard on the north side of the library, 134 E. Minnesota Ave., DeLand. It is free and open to the public.
Bannon is a photojournalist based in Nairobi, Kenya. His interest in photography was sparked by his mother, an amateur photographer with a darkroom in the bathroom, and his father, who placed him at age 10 in front of drawers of antique photographs and asked him to select the interesting ones for an exhibition on the history of photography.
His interest in the medium was constant but his professional career began in 2000. During his 20s, Bannon took care of his mother who had multiple sclerosis, an experience he credits with influencing his approach to photography.
“I don’t shy away from difficult stories,” he said. “The experience of taking care of my mother showed me clearly that behind every moment of perceived suffering there is a profound victory over circumstances. I look at people’s lives as being full of meaningful relationships, striving against the odds and achieving small victories.”
Bannon previously worked on long-term projects in both Romania and Russia. He has been living in Africa since 2005. He has photographed in Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Tanzania, Congo and India.
His clients include Medecins Sans Frontieres, UNHCR, UNICEF and CARE International. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, The Daily Telegraph, the Independent, the Guardian, Monocle Magazine, the KWANI? journal, Maclean’s and others.

StetsonU’s Kroumovitch, Rickman to perform Faculty Recital on Feb. 5

Violinist Routa Kroumovitch and pianist Michael Rickman, both critically acclaimed professors in the Stetson University School of Music, will give a Faculty Recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, in Lee Chapel of Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.
The concert will include works by Mozart, Gabriel Fauré, Beethoven and the Concert Fantasy on Themes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess by composer Igor Frolov.
Kroumovitch studied at the prestigious Latvian Music School. She toured and recorded on radio and television throughout the former USSR. She was a student of David Oistrach at the Moscow Conservatory and completed her formal studies at the Universidad de Chile. She was a first violinist of the Santiago Chamber Orchestra, concertmaster of the Chilean Philharmonic Orchestra, and concertmaster of the Chilean Symphony Orchestra. She received the Critic’s Award for the best solo performance in Santiago, Chile, and a Fulbright Award.
She continues to tour all over the world, and her master classes in Australia, China, Korea, Japan, Israel, and Europe are in high demand. She represents the United States as a judge in international violin competitions. She has been the concertmaster of numerous orchestras, and is currently the concertmaster of the Bach Festival Orchestra in Orlando. She is a regular guest at festivals such as Grand Teton, the Florida International Festival, Frutillar Music Festival in Chile, Schlern International Music Festival, Orfeo Music Festival, and The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
Rickman was honored in 2010 when Steinway & Sons added him a new member of its prestigious roster of Steinway Artists. A highly sought-after performer and teacher, Rickman has served on the faculty at Stetson since 1983. He has performed in cultural centers around the world – Wagnersaal in Riga, Latvia; Alice Tully, Bruno Walter and Carnegie halls in New York; Frutillar International Music Festival, Chile; as well as Miami, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Louisville, Kansas City, Sacramento, Toronto, London, Paris and Frankfurt.
Rickman has won the university’s Homer and Dolly Hand Award for Creative Activity and Research and the William Hugh McEniry Award for Excellence in Teaching. He also was a visiting professor at Stetson’s sister institution, the Paedogogische Hochschule in Freiburg, Germany, and in summer 2007, joined the artist faculty of the prestigious Schlern/Orfeo International Music Festival in Italy as a performer and teacher. CO2 emissions drop 21 percent since 2009

Stetson University has reduced its carbon footprint by 21 percent since 2009 – thanks to strategic efforts to conserve energy, make the campus more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly, use more eco-friendly products for landscaping and utilize cleaner transportation.

A new study by Stetson students and Associate Professor of Geography and Environmental Science J. Anthony Abbott shows Stetson’s annual carbon footprint weighs 13,193 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Results of the carbon audit study will be presented at a free public forum, “Assessing and Approaching Sustainability at Stetson University,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the Rinker Environmental Learning Center, 231 E. Michigan Ave., DeLand.

Stetson students led by Abbott have now conducted three carbon audits for the university (done every other year). The latest findings, for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011, shows Stetson’s CO2 emissions have declined 29 percent since the first carbon audit, for fiscal 2007, and 21 percent since the second carbon audit, for fiscal 2009.

“We’re very excited to see how well energy efficiency initiatives have paid off in terms of carbon reduction and total amount of energy used,” Abbott said.

“It reinforces that all of us can do something about this, in terms of the miles we drive and the kind of car we drive, and how we use electricity,” said Al Allen, associate vice president for Facilities Management at Stetson.

A greenhouse gas inventory is required by the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, a pledge Stetson made in 2007. As a signatory, Stetson is committed to working toward carbon neutrality.

Beginning this year, Stetson also plans to participate in the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Nearly 230 institutions of higher education have registered for the program designed to encourage sustainability in all aspects of higher education.

The university used The Campus Carbon Calculator – the tool favored by most U.S. universities and colleges – for its carbon audit study. In an academic course taught by Abbott, the students studied such items as fuel consumption, energy purchases, amount of natural gas burned on campus and fertilizer use. They surveyed the campus community about driving habits and commuter patterns.

For fiscal 2011, the team discovered the largest single source of emissions is electricity, followed by commuter travel, then natural gas combustion, then business travel. Compared to the 2009 audit, emissions from electrical production have decreased 23 percent. Campus fleet fuel, solid waste and fertilizer emissions also declined significantly, while natural gas usage increased slightly.

Students, faculty and staff have worked together over the past six years to assess sustainability at Stetson and to begin developing a climate action plan for the future. Initiatives implemented thus far include installation of efficient lighting, electronic ballasts and window film; temperature setbacks; solar for heating the swimming pool and some outdoor lighting; installation of LED lighting in parking areas; and elimination of hot water for laundry in most residence halls. An electric car was purchased to replace an SUV used by university Public Safety, and the university converted to diesel-powered utility carts. The university is migrating from synthetic products to organic for fertilization and weed-control.

Last August, all students were provided with a brochure on how each of them could make a difference in terms of conserving energy.

“Turn off lights, turn off fans, change temperatures, install better lighting, use cold water for laundry. It’s awareness and confidence that makes a difference,” Allen said. “People want to know what to do. Take advantage of technologies and increase awareness.”

While the overall campus community learned the basics, the students conducting the study gained the most knowledge – and invaluable real-world experience.

“This allows students to see how they can engage in climate-change mitigation in the workplace in an applied way,” Abbott said. “They learn how to track it in their daily life. They learn how to do climate-change mitigation, as opposed to just reading about it.”

Stetson Cove apartments purchased for student housing

Stetson University has purchased the Stetson Cove apartments at 315 W. Pennsylvania Ave. and plans to open the complex as student housing in August 2012 after making extensive renovations.

“Our existing apartment-style student housing on campus is currently our most popular option, and we believe Stetson Cove will be another attractive housing option for juniors, seniors and married and partnered students,” said Robert Huth, vice president for business and chief financial officer. “Undergraduate student enrollment increased this year, and we expect enrollment to continue increasing over the next few years. This facility positions us well for that growth.”

The purchase from BSST Investments LLC for $1.25 million was finalized earlier this month. The previous owners are working with current residents to ensure a smooth transition to other housing over the next few months.

By June 1, Stetson will begin $1.1 million in renovations to the 44 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Renovations will be made to kitchens, bathrooms and air conditioning systems, in addition to improvements to a courtyard/recreation area. Local contractors will be hired for the project – providing a needed boost to the local economy.

Stetson Cove apartments will be ready for Stetson students by August, in time for the start of fall semester 2012 classes. The apartment complex will be pet-friendly. Housing and Residential Life staff will live on the premises, and students will be required to sign agreements to abide by the university’s Housing and Residential Life policies. Security will be provided by Stetson’s Public Safety Department.
Stetson will soon begin accepting reservations for student housing for next fall, and the Housing and Residential Life staff has already begun fielding inquiries from interested students, said Ben Falter, director of Housing and Residential Life. The cost to live in Stetson Cove will be comparable to Stetson’s existing on-campus apartment housing.

“The large bedroom size and its off-campus feel, with on-campus amenities and security, make Stetson Cove an excellent choice for students seeking a more independent adult living environment,” said Falter.

Stetson partner with Feeding Children Everywhere to pack meals

Stetson University partnered with Feeding Children Everywhere this month to raise money and pack more than 5,000 meals for hungry children in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

About 75 students, alumni, faculty and staff and their family members from the business, education and counseling programs at Stetson’s Center at Celebration in Osceola County worked together in groups on five assembly lines packing nutritious meals to help those in need this holiday season.

Program Coordinator Wendy Lowe worked in advance with Stetson’s various Celebration-based programs and learned that students and alumni were interested in participating in an activity that would have a meaningful impact. Feeding Children Everywhere was selected because it has both a global and local presence.

On Dec. 3, Feeding Children Everywhere staff arrived at Stetson with all the supplies needed for the assembly lines. Executive MBA students assisted with the unloading of the truck and setting up the assembly lines. “Their enthusiastic support and interest were undeniable!” Lowe said.

After the assembly lines were ready to go, detailed instructions were given, and the work got under way as holiday music and spirit filled the room. Each assembly line packed meals that consisted of rice, protein (lentils), vegetables, vitamins and minerals. The meal is scientifically formulated to combat the effects of hunger on the human body. All that is necessary to cook the meal is adding boiling water. More information is available at www.FeedingChildrenEverywhere.com.

As the meals were packed into boxes, the youngsters flattened the meal pouches for shipping purposes and added personal messages and drawings to the outside of the shipping containers for the children in Guatemala. Guatemala City was selected because these meals will be added to a larger shipment headed that way soon.

“This philanthropic effort at the Celebration Center was a success! We re-evaluated our goals early on and, based on the participants’ infectious joy, we feel fortunate to be able to proudly say that Stetson University contributed to feeding over 5,000 starving children and fundraised over $1,300,” she said.

Participants agreed it was a positive experience – and promised to look for other philanthropic opportunities in the future.

Construction begins on new athletics complex

As it gears up for the return of Hatter Football and the introduction of Women’s Lacrosse in 2013, Stetson University will begin construction this week on a $6.7 million athletics complex to include a Field House and four playing fields.

Stetson’s Athletics Enhancement Initiative will provide a new and improved game-day field to be shared by Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Women’s Lacrosse, with bleacher seating, along with a practice field for soccer and lacrosse and two practice fields for football.

The Field House will be 25,000 square feet with a strength-and-conditioning center, locker rooms, coaches’ offices, athletic training facilities and meeting rooms. The fields will include new lighting and irrigation.

Parking will be constructed at the Field House and at the east end of the new fields. The complex will be on eight acres bound by North Amelia, East Minnesota, North Garfield andEast University avenues on the DeLand campus – a site already used for Stetson sports and recreation. Construction is expected to continue through next Aug. 1. A second phase – to include another practice field for soccer and lacrosse – is planned for the future.

“This is a critical step in strengthening our entire athletics program and in bringing back football to Stetson University,” said President Wendy B. Libby. “Our students, alumni and the greater community love sports, and expanding our athletics program will provide us all with more opportunities to cheer on the Hatters! Stay tuned for the unveiling of our new mascot in late January, too.”

Stetson has joined the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League and is now recruiting its first class of football players since the sport ended at the university after the 1956-57 season. A practice year is planned for 2012-13, with the first playing season being fall 2013. Hatter Football home games will be played at Spec Martin Stadium in downtown DeLand, and more than $2 million in improvements to that complex are being made by the city of DeLand in return for an annual rental fee from Stetson and an agreement to share revenue from sponsorships and advertising and a commission on concessions and parking. Women’s Lacrosse will begin next academic year with the first playing season being spring 2013. Stetson expects to hire a coach for lacrosse this month.

With the addition of those two sports, and Sand Volleyball as an intercollegiate sport this year, the university will have an additional 170 new scholar-athletes by 2013 – a 70-percent increase in the current number, said Director of Athletics Jeff Altier.

“The Athletics Enhancement Initiative will have a positive impact on every sport we offer,” Altier said. “The new weight room will allow us to bring in strength-and-conditioning coaches who will work with all of our student athletes.”

Use of the site’s existing athletics fields, for soccer and intramural sports, has concluded for this semester, and new intramural playing fields will be constructed on the Rinker Field near Stetson’s Hollis Center. Those new fields will be ready in time for the spring intramural season.

“We’re bringing intramurals to the center of campus, allowing those activities to be a focal point of the university,” Altier said.

Funding for the Athletics Enhancement Initiative is coming from donors. Stetson has already raised more than $2.3 million and is continuing to seek donations for the start-up costs for the project.

The general contractor for the new athletics complex will be BACE Construction, DeLand, and the architect is Carter Architecture, DeLand. Others involved in the project include civil engineer Boyer Singleton, DeLand, and playing-field designer Brown and Cullen, Gainesville.

During construction, Stetson will also correct drainage problems in the area of the North Amelia/East Minnesota intersection and install landscaping along the city’s new Alabama Avenue Greenway Trail, which cuts through campus in that area.

“This project will greatly enhance the landscaping and the beauty along Amelia and Minnesota avenues,” said Al Allen, associate vice president for facilities management.

Picturesque Freiburg is located in the heart of the Black Forest. Known as German Tuscany, it is said that the sun shines more often here than in any other city in Germany. Freiburg's Münster, whose construction began in 1200, is one of Europe's great cathedrals, and the medieval gates to the city can still be viewed today. Freiburg is filled with music, street theatre, and festivals. Located just 30 kilometers from France and 70 kilometers from Switzerland, there is ample opportunity to travel outside of the country as well as to points of interest within Germany.

Students study at the Paedagogische Hochschule (PH) where they may choose from a full curriculum of courses taught in German. Participants may also take courses at the Albert Ludwigs University, one of the oldest and most famous in Germany. Students can earn a minor in German in one semester.

Paid excursions may include trips to historic Munich or Heidelberg, as well as cultural sites and events within Freiburg. Excursions change each semester.

Students may study in Freiburg for the Spring Semester and for an academic year.

Fall Semester only is not available at the Freiburg site.

StetsonU to hold annual Yule Log Lighting on Tuesday, Dec. 6

Stetson University invites the community to join in its annual Yule Log Lighting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Hulley Tower between DeLand Hall and Chaudoin Hall, located at 513 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. The annual ritual, which traditionally opens the holiday season at Stetson University, is sponsored by the campus Student Christian Ministries and the Chaplain’s Office. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available across the street behind Allen Hall and Flagler Hall, both of which are located near the intersection of N. Woodland Blvd. and W. Minnesota Ave.

This tradition began at Stetson in 1938 with the lighting of candles in the women’s residence halls. According to tradition, the Yule Log ceremony, added 10 years later, brings good luck and happiness to those who take part.

Music played by Stetson students will signal the start of the outdoor festivities in front of the blazing Yule Log. Students from the School of Music will lead the crowd in caroling.

Honorary Stetson alumna Monya Winzer Gilbert, daughter of the late Geoffrey and Marjorie Gilbert of the Stetson University faculty, will recite the tradition of the Yule Log kindling. A custom traced to the Druids of northern Europe, it is said to bring good luck and happiness to all who take part. Marjorie Gilbert researched and wrote the history of the Yule Log ceremony for Stetson.

Students will give the invocation and read from Scripture, and Stetson Chaplain Michael Fronk will offer a meditation on the meaning of the evening. After the meditation, members of the Student Christian Ministries will invite participants to join them in casting sprigs on the fire, representing the year past, and in lighting candles from the Yule Log flame. Participants will then move to the Carlton Union Building circle, where refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

Stetson reaches out to family featured on "60 Minutes"

Dozens of Stetson University students, employees, alumni and top administrators did a double-take this week while watching a 60 Minutes television special about central Florida families who have fallen on hard times and are living in their cars.

One of the main subjects of the story – 15-year-old Arielle Metzger – was wearing a green and gray Stetson T-shirt during her interview. The Seminole County teenager, who lives in a truck with her brother Austin, 13, and father Tom, talked about how important education is to the family and how she wants to become a lawyer to help children and homeless people.

The Stetson community immediately felt as if Arielle was one of their own.

With both Arielle and Austin speaking so sincerely and eloquently about the transformative nature of education and the importance of that to them, Stetson has decided to guarantee the brother and sister a financial aid package to cover the full cost of attending the university. A university financial aid counselor will work with them to assist in planning for their education.

“Stetson has a significant commitment to first-generation college students, a long history of values-based education, a tradition in service learning, a College of Law ranked No.1 in the nation for trial advocacy by U.S. News & World Report, and is 25 miles from Seminole County, Fla.,” said President Wendy B. Libby.

“For these reasons, we see ourselves as an excellent fit for Arielle and her brother Austin’s continued education,” Libby said. “As an undergraduate at Stetson, Arielle in particular could participate in our Pre-Law Institute, allowing her unique insight into the legal profession.”

Further, to help guide these aspiring college students, three Stetson undergraduate students from Stetson’s Bonner Scholars Program will reach out to Arielle and Austin as mentors as they navigate life and conclude their public school education. The Bonner program is a prestigious national program dedicated to opening access to education for all students who are seeking an opportunity to “serve,” and Stetson is the only Bonner school in Florida.

In the meantime, the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Stetson is raising funds to help support some of the immediate needs of the Metzger family.

“Stetson University is always seeking students who ‘dare to be significant,’” Libby said. “These two young people certainly meet that criterion.”

University officials got in touch with Beth Davalos, who runs the Families in Transition Programs for Seminole County Public Schools and figured prominently in the 60 Minutes segment. Davalos said Friday morning that she had informed the Metzger family of Stetson’s offer and, “they’re very excited.”

L’UNIVERSITÉD’AVIGNON

A United Nations World Heritage Site and European City of Culture for the Year 2000, Avignon is located three hours south of Paris and about one hour from the Mediterranean Sea. This historic city was the seat of the papacy in the 14th century, and today is home to numerous museums and cultural sites. Known for its quaint charm, winding streets, cafes, and markets, Avignon was for centuries one of the artistic centers of France. The world famous Avignon Festival is a celebration of theater, music and dance, hosting artists from across the globe, and the renowned Cannes Film Festival is just a train ride away.

Stetson Abroad participants take French language courses in the Centre Universitaire d’Etudes Françaises d’Avignon (CUEFA) at the University of Avignon, located inside the walls of the medieval city. Students attend French classes 3-4 hours per day, and may earn a minor in French during the semester abroad.

Daily Tours

The Office of Admission in Griffith Hall offers information sessions and campus tours Monday through Friday throughout the year and on selected Saturdays. Information sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., with campus tours immediately following. We recommend that first--time visitors participate in both the information session and campus tour in order to gain a better perspective of our university. Personal interviews are also available. If you are interested in touring Stetson University, please fill out the online form or call the Office of Admission toll-free at 800-688-0101 to schedule your visit.

Shadow Stetson Days

Shadow Stetson Days are open to high school seniors and transfer students only. These days provide an opportunity to get an in-depth look at Stetson. You will be able to shadow classes, have lunch with current students, meet with a professor in your intended major, speak with your admission counselor, attend an information session, and take a guided campus tour. Shadow Stetson Days are offered on select days Monday through Thursday during September-April. Reservations must be made at least 2 weeks before your intended visit date. Overnight Visits

Overnight visits with current students in our residence halls are available on select days, Monday-Wednesday. These visits are available for accepted high school seniors only and may be arranged in conjunction with a Shadow Stetson Day. Please contact the Office of Admission at 800-688-0101 or at admissions@stetson.edu to schedule an overnight visit.

Group Visits

We believe having groups on our campus is a great way to show future students the opportunities college has to offer them, though we do limit our group visits to high school students only. All groups must have an adult chaperone for every 10 students and must contact Stetson two weeks (minimum) prior to their requested appointment. To schedule your group visit, please contact the Office of Admission at 800-688-0101.

NASA's past, present, future topic of Nov. 30 lecture

Chris Gebhardt, a Kennedy Space Center correspondent and story editor for the online space-flight-related news service NASASpaceFlight, will present a lecture at Stetson University about NASA’s past, present and future on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The talk, titled “After the Space Shuttle: Redefining NASA’s Position in the 21st Century,” will be at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It will be held in the duPont-Ball Library, lower level, Room 25, accessed from the Nemec Courtyard on the north side of the library,134 E. Minnesota Ave., DeLand.

Gebhardt, who graduated from Stetson in 2010 with degrees in American studies and English, has been reporting and writing for NASASpaceFlight.com since 2008. He also works in the writing center at Daytona State College.

“I was born and raised inDaytona Beach, so the space program has always been a huge part of my life,” he said. “After I was born in 1987, I saw every shuttle launch – well over 100.”

Gebhardt’s reporting often centers on internal documentation provided by NASA on the engineering and other technical aspects of manned and unmanned space flight, as well as on documentation about NASA’s decision-making on whether to fly or not fly.

Now in its fifth year of operations, NASASpaceFlight.com is a leading online news resource for everyone interested in space-flight-related news, with editors currently in the leading space-faring nations. The Summer Innsbruck program is a 6-Week Summer Session

International study is critical for a well-rounded global college education. However, few business students study abroad. Most find that the required curricula for business majors and the unavailability of transferable business courses limit opportunities for study abroad, and that most full-semester study abroad programs jeopardize an on-time graduation.

The Summer Innsbruck Program gives business students a viable study abroad option. The courses are regular AACSB International-approved business courses, required for most business majors, and taught by regular Stetson faculty and distinguished visiting faculty. This is a great opportunity to enhance your career opportunities and build your global resume. Arts and Science and Music majors are welcome and often find courses that fit in as electives for their field of study or as part of a business minor.

Classes are held at the University of Innsbruck in the walkable city of Innsbruck, Austria. Centrally located in the cool and beautiful Alps, Innsbruck is an ideal base to study and travel through Europe. Students benefit from the history, comfort, culture, and outdoor activities of the region.

Stetson Surf Team Hit the Water

The Stetson Surf Team hit the water this past Sunday and made lots of moves in the water. This is the first competition of the year for the team and although only having three members compete, compete is just what they did. Willie Lane,Roth Allen, and Jay MacConnell were the three musketeers that represented Stetson this weekend.

The field of competition was packed with other students from schools throughout Florida some of which were, FIT,DSC, UNF, and UCF. Currently FIT leads the pack so far this season with a 400 point lead over second place DSC. Individually the Stetson riders did well, but with only three surfers, they were outnumbered by the other full teams of nine surfers. Willie and Roth did place in the College Longboard taking 2nd and 6th place respectfully. Jay and Willie both competed in short board and weren't able to make it out of their heats to advance. Electric synthesizer's impact on music is topic of Nov. 28 talk

The electric music synthesizer and its impact on popular music will be the topic of a free public lecture atStetsonUniversity by Cornell University Professor Dr. Trevor Pinch, this year’s Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar at Stetson.

The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in the Feasel Rehearsal Hall inside Mary B. McMahan Hall,417 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand. The title is “In the Moog: The history and impact of the Electronic Music Synthesizer.”

“New musical instruments rarely come along – the electronic music synthesizer is one such instrument,” said Pinch, professor of science and technology studies and of sociology at Cornell. “Why is this and what does it take to innovate a new instrument? In this lecture, I will discuss Bob Moog’s invention of the synthesizer in the 1960s and its impact on popular music.”

The lecture will be accompanied by pictures from the period, and Pinch will play musical clips by artists such as the Beatles.

Pinch has taught at Cornell, inIthaca,N.Y., since 1990, and before that at universities in theUnited Kingdom. He has been a visiting fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science inBerlin,Germany. He earned his doctorate from theUniversityofBathin theUnited Kingdom.

He is best known for his contributions toward understanding the social nature of science and technology and for founding the theory, the social construction of technology (SCOT). He has co-authored a series of books about science, technology and medicine: The Golem: What Everyone Should Know About Science (Merton Prize, American Sociological Association); The Golem at Large; and Dr. Golem. He is also the co-author of Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer, the co-editor of Living in a Material World: Economic Sociology Meets Science and Technology Studies, and the founding editor of a book series Inside Technology.

Pinch’s current research focuses on product reviewing processes and online communities. For the past year, he has performed on the Moog synthesizer in the electronic duo, The Electric Golem.

As the Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar, Pinch will spend two days guest-teaching in digital arts, music technology and Darwinism and the Divine classes at Stetson and meet with Phi Beta Kappa student and faculty members, in addition to giving the public lecture.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honor society. Chartered in 1982, the Stetson chapter was the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter established at a private university inFlorida. Invitation to membership is a reflection of outstanding achievement, and only 10 percent of the nation’s colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

Membership to Stetson students is granted annually to the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes, based on grade-point average and other criteria, in the College of Arts & Sciences

Hatters earn six gold medals at Augusta

Augusta, Ga. - The Stetson Rowing team dominated the Head of the South Regatta on a frosty Saturday morning.
The entire team, led by assistant coach Jen Jones, demonstrated great determination, and finished the fall season by cleaning-up with six gold medals.
The Hatters dominated competitors from schools such as Clemson, Georgia, the College of Charleston , Virginia Tech, Liberty and other southern universities. Racing at the regatta lasted throughout the day.
Stetson took gold medals by captain Bill Brady and senior Gary Marra in the men's pair. That duo also raced again in the men's four with Mike Siegrist, senior Taylor Hetherington and coxswain Erin Lee.

Seniors Christy Ruane and Shay Martin swept the women's pair competition with a thirty second spread on the field.
In the lightweight category, Stetson fielded a teams of four and eight led by seniors Caitlin Burke, Christina Kapusta and Jacqueline Hobert along with teammates Caitlin Mooney, Pricilla White, Cathleen Vogelgesang, Amanda Ponce, Callie Peacock, and coxswain Kerry Burke. The Hatters won gold in both events.
The novice women also had a strong row their eight. It was their first appearance at the Head of the South and they also won gold.
Parents and friends gathered to support the team and celebrated success. This regatta concluded Stetson's fall season. The team looks forward to continued success in the spring, beginning at the Stetson Sprints Mayor's Cup, FIRA, SIRA, the Dad Vail Regatta and the IRAs.

Pet residence hall wins Humane Society award

Stetson University's Housing and Residential Life Department has been honored by the Halifax Humane Society in Daytona Beach for its creation of the university's per-friendly student residence hall and its contribution to animals.

Stetson received the 2011 Wingate Award by the Halifax Humane Society, the area's largest animal shelter. The award, named for the founders of the humane society, is given to individuals or groups that have furthered the HHS mission of protecting animals from cruel and neglectful treatment and encouraging responsible pet ownership.

The Halifax Humane Society hosted the inaugural presentation at the 2011 Donor Recognition Breakfast to present Stetson with the award. Residential Life Coordinators Megan Young and Arthur DeFilippo accepted the award on behalf of the department. Both Young and DeFilippo have been very involved with the creation, implementation and supervision of the Pet Friendly Living Community, which is located in Stetson's Nemec Hall.
"The Halifax Humane Society is grateful for community partners such as Stetson University," said Bryan Williams, development director for the humane society. "Their pet-friendly housing recognizes the numerous benefits of pet ownership and will help create the next generation of pet lovers in our community."
Stetson's pet-friendly residence hall opened in August 2010 and was expanded this fall due to its popularity. It now has 50 single rooms occupied by students pet owners and their pets.
"We had a waiting list in the first year, so we expanded the second year," Young said.

Nemec is co-ed, open to all Stetson students starting with freshman year. Pets including fish, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats, mice, cats, and dogs are allowed in the pet hall. This fall, the weight limit for dogs allowed in the hall was raised to 50 pounds.
Nemec has not only allowed students to enjoy their college experience with the comfort of their pets, but to become more responsible." It has allowed me to become more responsible and also to stay more focused on that is important," said Lauren Futral, a junior elementary education major and resident assistant for Nemec Hall.

Transgender Day of Remembrance events set for Nov. 21

On Monday, Nov. 21, Stetson University's Kaleidoscope gay/straight alliance will host a series of events in honor of the 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. The remembrance events are free and open to the public.
"This is a day in which individuals and groups around the world gather to remember those who have been murdered during the past year due to their gender identity or perceived gender identity," said Lexie Mucci, president of the Kaleidoscope student organization. " The goal of this event is not only to remember those lost, but to encourage dialogue on this topic, and to bring about positive change in our local communities."
From 12:45-1:00 p.m. students will conduct a " Die In" in front of the Carlton Union Building on campus. The circle drive in front of the CUB will be blocked off and students will lie in the roadway. Statistics will be shared to increase awareness about the hardship and discrimination transgender people face on daily basis. The event will be held in conjunction with event at other central Florida universities to make a large statement for acceptance and equality for all.

A vigil will be held on the lawn adjacent to the Hulley Tower at 7:00p.m. Since the film will be shown outside feel free to bring a chair and a blanket. Also the film "A Girl Like Me; The Gwen Aroujo Story" will be shown. The film shares a story of a 17 year-old transgender girl who was beaten and murdered in 2002, and then buried in a shallow grave in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Immediately following the film, Kaleidoscope will hold a candlelight vigil and remember the nearly 20 people lost this year to hate and ignorance.
International Transgender Day of Remembrance was found in 2998 and is held every November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on Nov. 28, 1998, in Allston, Massachusetts.

Stetson University's Office of Career Development and School of Arts & Sciences will present Donald Asher, internationally recognized author and speaker, in a lecture at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16. the event, to be held in the Rinker Auditorium of the Lynn Business Center, 345 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand, is free and open to the public.

The presentations is titled "The Value of a Liberal Arts Education in the Career Marketplace". This lecture is interactive and its main focus is on landing a dream job or internship and cracking the hidden job market to beat 1,000-to-one odds.

Asher is a frequent speaker on topics of career and higher education on college campuses across the country, and is well-knows for his career books, including the ground-breaking Cracking the Hidden Job Market. He wrote the best-selling guide to getting into graduate school, Graduate Admissions Essays. He has also written The Overnight Resume, How to Get Any Job, and Who Gets Promoted.

He holds the master of human resources and organization development degree from the University of San Francisco, and a bachelor's degree in philosophy-religion from Reed College. He is a featured speaker over 150 times per year, including recent lecture tours in Canada, Mexico, India, China, South Korea, and Germany, where he spoke about international career trends and the borderless career.

Tony Michaelides, who is one of the greatest marketer, mentor, author, radio host and music industry entrepreneur, will share insights and advice from the experiences he has developed over a 37-year long career as an artist, record labels and producers. He has worked with U2, Bob Marley, Whitney Houston, Puff Daddy, Annie Lennox, Elvis Costello and other world-famous musicians.

His outstanding history of working together with a long list of famous musicians provide a colorful background of characters and landscapes. Michaelides' lessons are often distinctly business oriented-the same basic principles learned in business school.

Dear Parents and Students,
On behalf of the Office of the Dean of Students and the Student Government Association, we are happy to announce that Stetson University will again be offering shuttle service to the airport. This service will be available to and from the Orlando International Airport (MCO/OIA) at designated heavy travel times throughout this academic school year. Our goal is to provide safe and reliable transportation for our students, as well as eliminate the added stress of finding transportation. The shuttle service is offered to Stetson students FREE of charge, excluding gratuity. There is limited space on the shuttle. The shuttle will be available on the following dates and times:

November 23, 2011 (Departure from campus): 9:00am, 11:30am, 2:00pm, and 4:30pm
November 27, 2011 (Pick-up at MCO/OIA): 11:00am, 3:00pm, 5:30pm, and 7:00pm
December 16, 2011 (Departure from campus): 9:00am, 11:30am, 2:00pm, and 4:30pm
January 15, 2012 (Pick-up at MCO/OIA): 11:00am, 3:00pm, 5:30pm, and 7:00pm

To sign up for the shuttle, students are required to fill out the online form (link below). The shuttle will depart from the CUB Circle and drive students directly to the Orlando International Airport. For return trips, students will meet our “Van Hosts” in a designated area that be determined once reservations have been made, and wait for the next departing shuttle. The shuttle will drop students off at the CUB Circle.

Hatter Hoedown Event will be hosting a day-long fun-fest featuring a Celebrity Golf Tournament in the morning following a country music concert in the evening. The Golf Tournament is going to take place at the Victory Hills Golf Club in DeLand. Sawyer Brown Bands and friends will be performing at the country music concert on Stetson campus that night.

All proceeds from this exciting day of entertainment will go directly to benefit Stetson Men's Basketball Program lead by new Head Coach, Casey Alexander.

If you enjoy playing golf, you might want to consider playing golf on a special day like that. Come and support Stetson Men's Basket ball Program and make this day a unique experience with some golf, food, and great music with the legendary Sawyer Brown Bands.

It is important to implement strategies for preserving the natural environment around water and plan for future economic that has water sustainability as a care value. This project has the goal of teaching the community about the importance of sustainable water use, how to help protect this vital resource, and how water, nature and humans are interconnected. Also, this project allows students to be a part of something bigger than one class activity.

Eric Canny named Director of International Learning at Stetson

Erica Canny, an experienced international educational administrator who has traveled to 45 countries and lived in four different countries, has been named director of international learning at Stetson University.

Canny will lead Stetson's efforts to deepen international intercultural learning and to integrate those opportunities across academic disciplines and amongst students, faculty, and staff. The university currently offers semester- and year long study abroad programs to many different countries such as China, Spain, Germany, and many others. Also, shorter field studies to different countries are offered. Stetson student come from 44 countries.

With 16 years of experience in the field of international education, including expertise in educational policy and programming, academic program and curriculum development, enrollment management strategy, technology, crisis management, student and staff development, public relations and grant writing. Canny joins Stetson from the University of North Texas where he held the position of director of international initiatives since 2008. He was instrumental in improving and integrating international operations throughout UNT by facilitation collaboration in areas across the university including faculty support, admissions, budgeting and student services. He was also acting director of global learning and experience (study-abroad) at UNT from 2010 to 2011.

Canny said " I am excited to be joining a nationally ranked university seriously committed to pursuing a holistic model of international education. Stetson is already doing much in the global arena, and I look forward to the collaborative work with faculty, students and the entire community to enhance Stetson's programs in this area. The potential for strengthening and integrating Stetson's international mission into the campus ethos, from classes to curricular programs, from study abroad to international students, to inclusion of international issues in the curriculum, as well as linked with diversity, is a phenomenal opportunity given Stetson's values and approach to a significant educational experience".

200 students were inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma honor society last week

Approximately 200 of Stetson University’s top students were inducted into Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at a Re-Chartering and Induction Ceremony at Stetson University last week. Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest and largest freshman honor society and was originally chartered at Stetson in 1978 but had been inactive since the mid-1990s. Stetson is the only central Florida college or university to have chapters of both Phi Eta Sigma, which specifically for freshmen, and Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s most prestigious honor society for all undergraduate years.

All current undergraduate students who met the qualifications of having earned a 3.5 or higher GPA during their first year at university were invited to become members.

Furthermore, four Stetson faculty members were selected as honorary members this year - Dr. Michael Denner. associate professor of Russian studies: Dr. Phillip Lucas. Professor of religious studies: Dr. Carolyn Nicholson, professor of marketing: and Dr. Stephen Robinson, professor of music.

At the ceremony, students were encouraged by several people to continue pursuing academic accomplishment. They were also told to find, explore, and share their passions for learning and teaching.

Stetson University’s School of Business Administration has been named among nation’s best

Princeton Review released a new guidebook on October 11^th, 2011, that lists Stetson University’s School of Business Administration as one of the “Best 294 Business Schools”. The new 2012 edition of the book includes a profile of Stetson’s School of Business Administration. The profile provides information on academics, student life and environment, the admissions process, statistical data and career placement services.

Stetsons profile on the Princeton Review includes comments directly from students. " The atmosphere is collaborative, as most students are also interested in diversifying their skills in both business and networking," the guidebook said. " For professionals the atmosphere is supportive, and students find they 'can relate with classmates, since many also have full-time jobs." Students especially highlighted Stetson’s small class size, personalized education, accessible and supportive faculty, modern facilities, flexible schedules for working professionals, and global focus, including opportunities to study business abroad during short or semester-long trips.

To make Stetson’s Business School one of the best in the country, the graduate faculty is committed to delivering the highest quality instruction in an active-learning, engaged environment. Professors teach students within small classes and provide insights and focus on academics. In today’s rapidly changing global environment it is really important to have a curriculum that focuses on international aspects as much as it focuses on domestics.

Halloween is just around the corner - want to get scarred at Halloween Horror Nights

On Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 you have the possibility to go to Halloween Horror Nights XXI at Universal Studios.

If you decide to go, you can purchase your tickets at Hatter Production until noon on October 14th. The price of the ticket is $66.99 and includes transfer from Stetson University to Universal Studios and back. The bus will be leaving around 6pm that day and get back around 3am.

Have you ever wondered how students got chosen to be in the Reality Campaign posters around the campus?
If you are in the opinion that one of your friends or classmates are Social Influencers, you might want to nominate them to be shown on this years Reality Campaign posters. At the moment, we are looking for new faces to be shown around campus.

Don't know what a Social Influencer is?
A Social Influencer is a student who is respected, seen as cool, and an overall likeable guy or girl by a majority of students and student groups. This student goes to parties and other social events and is also really responsible. Those are the students who might drink at parties but don't get wasted. Other students might listen to this student and value their opinion. Students fell comfortable being around that person and like to ask that person for advice.

How about watching "Insidious" tonight at 9pm at the Stetson Room. In case the rain decides to stop by tonight, the movie will be shown at the Hulley Tower. Bring a blanket to get all snuggeled up. This event like many others is created by Hatter Production. Free popcorn, candy corn, as well as drinks are offered.

Insidious is a 2011 American independent supernatural horror movie written by Leigh Whannell and directed by James Wan. The story of the movie centers on a couple that moves with their three children into an old house and begins to suspect that they are under siege from otherworldly forces when their youngest son inexplicably enters a comatose state and becomes a vessel for ghosts in an astral dimension.

Stetson University Senior and Transfer Expo

"The Buried Life" visited Stetsons campus

I hope everyone had a great weekend and got to enjoy Floridas gorgeous Fall.

Maybe some of you guys went to see Ben Nemtin and Dave Lingwood from MTV's popular bucket list show "The Burried Life" at Stetson University’s’ campus last Saturday.

While they were on our campus they talked about their show and why it’s important to give back and be all you can be in life. They travel the globe in a purple RV to complete a list of “100 Things We Want To Do Before We Die.” Along the way, they also help strangers accomplish something on their own list. Everywhere they go they ask the question: “What do you want to do before you die?”
